Live Stream & Camera Operator

Freelance

As a live stream and camera operator, you’ll work with cameras, microphones and various other production equipment. You will also produce streams by combining the use of complex technology with creative visual skills.

You’ll work under a remote operations manager and may be supported by a camera assistant on some jobs. At times you will operate as part of a team for large events.

You may work on a variety of live events, such as:

  • Weddings
  • Funerals
  • Sport
  • Corporate events
  • Religious services
  • Panel shows
  • Graduations
  • Remote productions
  • Product launches

Responsibilities

As a live stream and camera operator, you’ll need to:

  • Assemble, prepare and set up equipment prior to filming, which may include tripods, cameras, microphones, monitors, lighting, cables and encoders.
  • Offer advice on how best to shoot a scene and explain the visual impact created by particular shots.
  • Plan shots. With the nature of live events, being well prepared is key.
  • Practice camera movements and smooth transitions.
  • Find solutions to technical or other practical problems (for a wedding live stream, for example, the natural light conditions need to be taken into account when setting up shots).
  • Be prepared to innovate and experiment with ideas.
  • Work quickly, especially as timing is such an important factor.
  • Take sole responsibility in situations when it is only yourself producing the live stream.
  • Keep up to date with filming methods and equipment.
  • Repair and maintain equipment.
  • Demonstrate a good awareness of health and safety issues.
  • Drive yourself and your equipment to and from locations.

Part of the role involves interacting and maintaining good working relationships with other members of the team and public including the:

  • Other production crew
  • Venue staff
  • Celebrants
  • Wedding parties
  • Mourning families
  • Business professionals
  • Presenters/commentators
  • Instrumentalists
  • Performers

Skills & Requirements

You’ll need to show:

  • Sound theoretical, practical and technical knowledge of cameras and audio equipment.
  • Understanding of encoders and live distribution.
  • The ability to frame and compose shots well.
  • The ability to perform camera moves smoothly and accurately.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills (when to employ tact and diplomacy).
  • The capacity to multitask and think on your feet.
  • Team working skills and the ability to lead and motivate others.
  • The ability to work in a high-pressure environment.
  • Flexibility, creativity and patience.
  • Attention to detail.

And have:

  • A full UK driving licence and own a car or van.
  • A willingness to travel.
  • Flexible availability
  • Your own equipment.
    • Full or partial equipment can be provided with rental deductions taken into account.

Pay

Operators will work on a freelance basis and rates of pay vary according to the type and level of production. These can vary from £100 to £400 per stream. On occasion, there could be more than one stream in a day. You will also receive £12 per hour, for each hour spent travelling, for jobs over 60 miles.

What to expect

  • You will need to be flexible with availability. The nature of some events can mean we get last minute enquiries. However, wherever possible you will have weeks notice, if not months.
  • Outside broadcasts mean you’ll be working in all weather conditions.
  • Our live events are spread out across the UK. We try to find you local work but a willingness to travel is required.
  • Dedication, patience and stamina are needed. The work can be physically demanding as you have to stand for long periods of time and carry heavy equipment.
  • Working hours are generally unpredictable and can, at times, be long. However, the average job requires 2 hours of setup and testing, then live for 1-2 hours.
